2G Cryogenic Magnetometer
The 2G cryogenic magnetometer is the workhorse of our lab. Housed in a magnetically shielded room together with the ovens it allows for an efficient work flow when demagnetizing samples.
JR-6 Spinner Magnetometer
The JR-6 Spinner magnetometer is perfect for measuring magnetizations of very strongly magnetized samples, that may be beyond the dynamic range of the cryogenic magnetometers.
Ovens
Our two ovens are adapted ASC WD-48SC furnaces, that are now computer-controlled for optimized accuracy and performance.
Robotised 2G Cryogenic Magnetometer
The second 2G magnetometer in our lab is equipped with a robot system. It can autonomously measure series of AF demagnetizations and ARM/IRM remagnetizations.
Quantum Diamond Microscope
The Quantum Diamond Microscope is housed in its dedicated dust-controlled shielded room, together with the optical microscopes, for an optimal work flow of magnetic microscope imaging.
Leica Optical Microscopes
Fort Hoofddijk's optical microscope facility consists of a Leica DM750P optical microscope with a DMC540 camera attached to it, and a Leica S9i stereoscope. Both are connected to a computer to ease image taking and analysis.
MFK1 Kappabridge
The AGICO MFK1 is equipped with the anisotropy attachment and housed in the magnetically most quiet area of the Fort.
KLY3 Kappabridge
The KLY3 Kappabridge has a furnace attachment and is controlled through our Labview software that measures the susceptibility of samples as function of temperature segments.
Curiebalance
The Curiebalance is a home-built machine to asses the magnetic behavior of samples as function of temperature and applied alternating fields. It is therefore ideally suited to determine Curie temperatures.
PMC MicroMag 3900
Our PMC MicroMag 3900 AGM's are housed in the Earth Simulation Lab due to the strong field they produce.
Sample Prep Lab
Our sample prep lab consists of a work bench with sink, tools and worktop for manual grinding of rock samples, scales, sonic baths, compressed air, a 'syton polisher', and a fire cabinet with common chemicals.
Rock Workshop
Our Rock Workshop is home to several cutting machines and a drill press for preparation of paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic samples.

Computational server Tesla
Tesla is a dedicated computational system for Micromagnetic Tomography inversions. It is an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen 10 server, with two Intel Xeon-Gold 6230R processors (26 double-threaded cores @ 2.10 GHz each), 192 GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro RTX6000 GPU Module for CUDA optimized tasks.
Image Processing Workstation
Workstation to process (MicroCT) images and perform e.g. segmentation and 3D analyses using the Dragonfly software package.
Petrol set 1
Petrol set 1 is a complete field set for sampling hard rock, including a petrol-powered drill, orientation devices, tools, and some frequently needed spare parts.
Petrol set 2
Petrol set 2 is identical to set 1.
